Recently, two thoughtful Joerns employees went beyond the call of duty to help-out in the community during the Coronavirus pandemic. Gabi and Szilard from production joined a Facebook group called ‘Plate one up and pass it on’ which urges its members to bake, cook and donate food items to nurses and care staff within the NHS and the community.

As often happens with this sort of thing, accounting for special dietary requirements can slide under the radar which leads to some people being unable to eat the food items. Since Gabi has a strict gluten-free diet, baking gluten-free cakes for NHS staff suffering from Coeliac disease at Worcester Royal Hospital was an appropriate niche to satisfy!

After some enquiries at the hospital, it turned out there were approximately 15 staff who suffer from Coeliac disease and with some help from her daughter, Reka who is 12, apple cake slices with lemon zest and cupcakes were soon in production!

After some research into which wards the relevant staff were working on, they were able to ensure the food parcels made their way directly to them. Extra containers of treats were also provided in case anybody else fancied sampling their delights!

Gabi comments “I am planning to continue doing gluten-free baking for the hospital as long as my flour stocks last. It is simply our way of saying thank you to the staff, who themselves are going above and beyond during these testing times”

Gabi’s daughter has been asked to do some drawing for the elderly patients to help cheer them up – she’s already on it!
